Sales of Goods Act (2012 and 1979) means all goods must be:

  • Of ‘satisfactory quality’
  • ‘As described’, no false advertisements
  • ‘Fit for the purpose for which they were intended’

Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations (2008) and Trade Descriptions Act (1968):

Three main sections:

  • A ban on unfair practices
  • A ban on misleading or aggressive practices
  • A blacklist of unfair practices

Intended to stop the following:

  • Claiming an item is ‘free’ when that is not the case
  • Aggressive doorstep selling
  • Refusing to take no for an answer by a salesperson
  • Persistent cold calling
  • Time limited offers that are not limited at all

Weights and Measures (1985) - it is an offence to give an incorrect indication of the amount of product on sale. For example if a bottle is labelled 1L it must contain 1L

Unsolicited Goods Act (1971) - it is illegal to demand payment for services that have not been ordered.

Data Protection Act (1998) - controls how personal information on groups such as employees and customers is stored and used by a business.

This data must be:

  • For lawful purpose
  • For a limited time
  • Kept securely
