Job Description - this is an outline of the tasks and responsibilities a job has.

Person Specification - this the ideal characteristics the business wants from the person that will be filling the position

Internal Appointment - this is recruiting someone who already works for the business to the vacant job position.

Advantages:

  • Recruitment will take less time because candidates are already known to the business
  • There is no need to spend money on costly advertisements
  • There will be less need for induction training
  • How the business operates is already known to the candidates, meaning less training is required
  • The opportunity of promotion can motivate existing employees in the business

Disadvantages:

  • Might cause resentment between employees
  • The employee might work better in their old position than their new one

External Appointment - this is recruiting someone from outside the business

Advantages:

  • They are likely to bring new ideas and enthusiasm to the job
  • There is more choice in applicants
  • It might cause less resentment than choosing an internal candidate

Disadvantages:

  • Needs more training than internal candidate
  • Money has to be spent on advertising
  • Recruitment takes a lot longer
  • Interviews take up time and money
  • May demotivate existing employees

Stage of Recruitment:

Advertising - When a business is advertising their job position they must consider where a suitable place to advertise would be. For example the job of director would be advertised in a national paper to get the biggest outreach, on the other hand a temporary replacement position is more likely to be advertised in the local paper.

Application - A business will receive all the applicants CVs and whatever other pieces of information about the applicants that they have requested on their advertisement. The business now has to go through all of them and make a shortlist of who to invite to have further interviews with.

Interviews - This is when the candidates come in to talk to their potential employer and answer any questions that the interviewer asks them. Based on the answers they recievethe business will choose who they want to fill the position.

Businesses also conduct other tasks to help them which include:

  • Team tasks and activities
  • Presentations on a requested topic to the selection team
  • Personality tests
  • References from previous employers or schools
  • A work task or trial.
