As well as appraisal there are also other ways for a business to evaluate the workforce performance.

Labour Turnover - This measures the number employees who have left the business.

If this is a high figure it could be a symptom of low morale.

Absenteeism - when employees are absent from work with minor medical ailments such as an upset stomach or a headache. Absenteeism can be a key indicator of low moral and motivation levels

Lateness - works out how often employees are late to work, high levels could mean low motivation to come to work.

Workforce productivity - a measure of output per employee in a particular period of time. Productivity is a key indicator of employee performance.

Limitations of the use of these Quantitative methods:

  • Averages can be misleading
  • Not all departments employ the same amount of people
  • A single figure in isolation is of limited use
  • Numbers fo not explain the situation
